Construction mileage: K92+000 ~K103+000
Yuxi ~ Yuanjiang Expressway is an important section of the No. 213 National Highway and Kunming ~ Bangkok Highway as well as a key highway construction project of the Ministry of Transport and Yunnan Province during the “Ninth Five-Year” period. With the total construction mileage of 112.091km, Yuxi ~ Yuanjiang Expressway is located in the Ailao Mountain Range. With stretching chains of mountains and ravines, the project is subject to complicated landforms with poor geological and hydrologic conditions with the elevation drop of 888m between the starting and ending points. With the characteristics of connection of bridges and tunnels, deep excavation and high filling, steep slopes and many bends, great difficulty in environmental protection and side slope control determined by the special landforms, it is one of the relatively arduous projects in the highway construction history of Yunnan. When inspecting the construction site of Yuxi ~ Yuanjiang Expressway in 1999, Hu Xijie, former Minister of the Ministry of Transport, said, “Yuxi ~ Yuanjiang Expressway may be well considered the first expressway in the mountainous area in the true meaning in China by so far.” The construction of Yuxi ~ Yuanjiang Expressway was commenced in May 1997 and open to traffic for testing on October 29, 2000. The project was awarded the National Superior Project Silver Medal.
